Postgraduate | Laboratory of Marine Geology & Physical Oceanography
The past decade in Greece has been characterised by sustained interest in, and concern for the protection of the Marine Environment which makes up 74% of our national territory. In response to this public demand the Laboratory has organised and runs a two year course in Environmental Oceanography which was approved by the Ministry of Education.
The course aims to introduce graduates of physics chemistry, biology, geology and engineering who have a diversified field of specialization, to acquire a deeper and broader knowledge of the operational processes in the Marine Environment and to better understand the multivariability of the coastal shelf and deep sea environments. It furthermore aims to provide natural scientists and engineers who work for the public service and deal with the marine environment, with the skill to assess and predict the influence of anthropogenic inputs and determine the appropriate use of the seafloor, thus contributing to the development, management and protection of the environment.
During the two year course the post-graduate students attend in the fist two semesters the following curricula in Marine Sciences:
-
Marine Geology and its application on environmental issues and offshore construction
-
Bio-Geo-Chemical processes in the Marine Environment-Marine Pollution
-
Environmental changes during Quaternary: Palaeoceanography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaecology
-
Statistical Analysis and its applications on Marine Environmental issues.
-
On successful completion of the first two semesters the students then carry out research in their particular field and write a dissertation.
