The postgraduate programme of Studies of the Department of Geology in "Earth Sciences and the Environment" offers degrees both in Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

The Postgraduate Studies Progamme focuses in improving the knowledge and expertise of young scientists coming from the fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Agricultural and related disciplines in scientific topics of the Geosciences. It aims to create a new generation of scientists who will be able to successfully contribute to the need of our society for improved social and economic conditions which will fulfill the sustainable development of our planet.

Objectives of the Programme

The main objective of the “Earth Sciences and the Environment” Postgraduate Studies Programme is the production of human resources with specialized skills of high level, designed to meet the increasing demand on the interaction of the Geo-environment and the geological and anthropogenic processes under which it evolves. The Programme aims to develop the research and the advancement of knowledge in Environmental Sciences.

By implementing the design of the Programme, based on the human resources of our Department and related associates and partners, and the departmental infrastructure, the knowledge required is provided in all sub-disciplines of geological sciences concerning: (1) the assessment, recording and evaluation of the potential environmental impact of the various geological processes and anthropogenic interference; (2) the environmental management and the development of appropriate methodologies for tackling adverse effects.

Admission to the Programme

A. Master studies: Students can be admitted in one of the following courses offered:

• Earth Materials-Environment  
• Data processing and analysis in Earth Sciences  
• Applied Environmental Geology and Geophysics  

In the MSc programme admission is open to graduates of Geology and other related disciplines. Candidates with a first degree in subjects other than Geology may be required to attend a number of basic (qualifying) modules in Geology.

A minimum of three-semester course work (90 ECTS credits in total) is required for the Master's degree. Students admitted into the Master's degree programme will be required to take a total of six graduate modules, i.e. a minimum of three-semester course work (90 ECTS credits in total): four modules in the first semester and two others in the second semester. In the second semester they have to begin with a research project which will be the subject of the MSc thesis. At the end of the third semester they have to submit this thesis.

B. Doctoral studies:

Doctoral Studies in the Department of Geology of the University of Patras aim at original scientific research to promote knowledge by high-level candidates. The MSc degree is a prerequisite for entering the Doctoral programme. A minimum time of six semesters is required to complete the thesis. The Ph.D. degree is awarded primarily on the basis of successful completion of significant and original research, and a viva conducted by a seven-member examining committee.
