The Department of Geology was founded in 1977 in the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Patras, today’s Faculty of Sciences, and with the implementation of Law 1268/82, it has been operating since 1982 as an independent administrative unit. Since the academic year 1978-1979, when the Department admitted its first 65 students, more than 1400 Geology degree, >500 Master of Science degree and >140 Doctor of Philosophy degree holders have graduated.

Since the academic year 1998-1999 the Department has been housed in its own building, which includes all the teaching rooms needed for its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, a 30-seat computer centre, a library-reading room, offices and laboratories.
Apart from the main building, the Department also includes the facilities of the Seismology Laboratory, which is the only one that remained in a separate building on campus.
In May 2019, the Department of Geology of the University of Patras was one of the first Departments in Greece to receive accreditation for its Curriculum from the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE).
